A
multimedia projector takes the image that is normally
displayed on a computer screen and projects it onto
a large white projector screen. This allows everything
that would appear on the computer screen to be seen
by everyone in the room. Projectors are called 'multimedia'
projectors because you can also use them with an
audio/visual source such as a video recorder, DVD
player or satellite system. Consider the following
when buying a multimedia projector.
Brightness: This is measured
in ANSI lumens. For most class and meeting rooms
you will need a brightness upwards of 1000 ANSI
lumens. This will allow you to have the lights
on and the blinds open in most average sized rooms.
The higher the lumens the brighter the projector.
Weight: Ultra portable projectors,
weighing from as little as 2 lbs., are ideal for
use with interactive panels and for people on
the move. "Top end" projectors for fixed installations
in large auditoriums, have brightness ratings
of 2000 ANSI lumens or greater. They weigh more,
but as they are installed, weight isn't really
a consideration.
Computer resolution:
You need to buy a projector that has the same
resolution as the computer you will be using with
it. The majority of projectors on the market are
SVGA or XGA. Always go for XGA unless you have
a very low budget. SXGA projectors are available
but are usually over twice as expensive as an
XGA one of the same brightness. The resolutions
have names as follows:
